February 1 (A Day) and February 2 (B Day): Genetics Lesson 4

OBJECTIVE : Students will complete the Beaker Babies Lab Activity in order to demonstrate and analyze the outcomes of first generation genetic crosses.

WARM-UP: Construct a Punnett square for the following cross: Tt x Tt. Identify the genotypic and phenotypic ratios if T=tall and t=short.

CLASSWORK:
1) Review Warm-Up.
2) Review Probability Lab, watch short movie clip on probability.

3) Perform Beaker Babies Lab.

OBJECTIVE: Studnets will explore the principles of probability in order to predict the outcomes of genetic crosses using Punnett squares.

WARM-UP: HSA REWIND: Develop an HSA question that tests the following indicator (3.1.1). Be sure to include the correct answer- The student will be able to describe the unique characteristics of chemical substances and macromolecules utilized by living systems.

CLASSWORK:
1) Review Section 11-2 from your textbook.
2) Perform Probability Lab.
3) Do next five flashcards; covalent bond, ion, ionic bond, molecule and cohesion.

WARM-UP: Complete "Inquiry Activity" on page 262 of your textbooks.

CLASSWORK:
1) Get test back and review if necessary. (B Day students got their tests back on January 25.)
2) Review Section 11-1 in your textbooks.
3) Do Punnett Square worksheet.
4) If time allots, do questions 1 through 4 from Genetics Worksheet.
5) Do next five flashcards: proton, neutron, electron, element and compound.

NOTE: On Thursday, January 4, I will be on a field trip during 3rd and 4th periods.

OBJECTIVE: Students will identify the mechanism of cell division in order to discuss how cell growth affects a cell’s function.

WARM-UP: What are the two things that limit the size of cells?

CLASSWORK:
1) Complete Section 10-1 and Section 10-2 Worksheets in your floppy blue book. These are due by the end of class today!!! A Day students please give these to the substitute teacher.
2) If you finish early, begin tonight's homework.
3) B Day students were also given about 30 minutes to complete make-up work for the quarter.

2) Begin Review of Chapter 10 material, Section 10-1. Fill in Section 10-1 outline as we review. (10 minutes)
3) Watch Part 1 of Mitosis Video. Take 15 lines of notes. (15 minutes)
4) Make Flashcards for next 5 vocabulary words: biology, sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction, metabolism, stimulus. (10 minutes)

1) Students will evaluate the energy produced during the steps of cellular respiration in order to discuss the efficacy of anaerobic versus aerobic respiration.
2) Students will review photosynthesis and respiration in order to compare and contrast them.

WARM-UP: Complete "Analyzing Data" section in Chapter 8 of your textbooks.

CLASSWORK:
1) Review Warm-Up.
2) View short video on Cell Respiration.
3) Discuss the role of ATP in cells and anaerobic versus aerobic respiration.
4) Complete comparison of Cell Respiration and Photosynthesis using Transparency Worksheet.
5) Period 1A needs to complete foldable pamphlet for Cell Respiration.
6) Hand-out field trip permission slips to those students who have paid their lab fees.
7) Do next five vocabulary index cards; spontaneous generation, controlled experiment, manipulated variable, responding variable, and theory.

TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK:
1) Study Chapters 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9 for the HSA Benchmark next class. Spend a minimum of an hour studying the vocabulary from each chapter. Pace yourself so you are not doing it all the night before the test.

Write the chemical equation for photosynthesis. Write the chemical equation for cellular respiration.

CLASSWORK:
1) Review Warm-Up
2) Do Chloroplast/Mitochondria "foldable" activity
3) Write out five flash cards: science, observation, data, inference, and hypothesis

TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK:
1) Use foldables and flash cards to study for next week's HSA Benchmark test.

1) Section 8-3 Worksheet from your Biology floppy workbook.
